KING SOLOMON’S MINES (1985), CAN. Richard Chamberlin, Sharon Stone, Shai K. Ophir, Herbert Lom, Bob Greer. P: Menachem Golan, Yoram Globus. CAMEOS, VILLAINS
This Golan-Globus movie shows pro-German Arabs enslaving Africans. Critical of this outlandish 1985 update, Walter Goodman writes in the NYT (23 November 1985), “Can you imagine Deborah Kerr calling somebody a ‘cheap-suited camel-jockey?’” Sharon Stone utters the slur, here.
Scene: Arabs and Germans want to nab the heroine’s father; the man knows where to find African treasures. Before credits roll, the Arab villain, Kassam (Ophir), “a towel-headed creep” wearing a red fez, plunges steel spikes into a man. Kassam’s cohort is Colonel Bockner (Lom), a German.
• Tongola, an African village. Arabs wearing burnooses appear. Says Col. Bockner, “What animals, what filth. They’re sheiss (shit)!” Later, Bockner calls Africans “primitive natives [and] primitive cannibals.” Quatermain (Chamberlin) tags an African woman “prune face.”
• An Arab holds hostage chained Africans. Barks the whip-wielding Arab, “Black slaves are sold for a hundred bucks. You can own one for life.” Quatermain punches the Arab slaver, freeing the Africans.
• Tongola’s Africans (not Arabs) attack a train carrying enemy Axis soldiers.
Note: Arab villains do not appear in H. Rider Haggard’s classic novel, nor in earlier movie versions of King Solomon’s Mines (1937 and 1950). Why do producers Golan and Globus insert them?
